Mozambique

Travelling through unspoilt Mozambique

With its melting pot of cultures, Mozambique is one of the most interesting destinations in Africa. The expansive coastline, stretching almost 2500 kilometres along the Indian Ocean, presents stunning white beaches and beautiful coral reefs. The Portuguese and Arabian buildings, which include churches and mosques, tell their own story about Mozambique's 16th-century history. Let's not forget the cuisine either; Mozambique is the country in which to sample 'Tiger Prawns', in addition to a host of other culinary delights that are served in exotic restaurants.

Mozambique is stunning

Mozambique's white sandy palm-lined beaches, turquoise waters teaming with different types of fish and brightly coloured coral reefs are regarded as some of Africa's most beautiful highlights. They have made the south coast of Mozambique a very popular destination for many years; however, the north of the country is also developing rapidly, which means that even more of Mozambique's natural beauty is becoming accessible to visitors.

Mozambique's mix of local, Portuguese and Arabian culture creates a unique atmosphere that gives the country an almost magical appearance. Surrender to the bounty of natural beauty and find peace on one of the many islands off the coast, or visit the inland reserves, where the game population continues to expand.

The central coast of Mozambique

The Bazaruto Archipelago is located halfway down the length of Mozambique and an outstanding tropical beach destination. It's also an excellent location for snorkelling and diving. You can reach the archipelago over land from the lively coastal town of Vilanculos, or take a dhow (traditional fishing boat with a sail) trip to the Arabian-style city of Maxixe.

The game reserves and lakes of Mozambique

Mozambique offers much more than merely beach destinations. Lake Niassa (otherwise known as Lake Malawi) is located along the western border of the country and, thanks to the many endemic fish species here, this is a popular destination among divers. Niassa Reserve is one of Africa's last remaining frontiers of wildernesses. This unspoilt area, which is graced with breathtakingly beautiful landscape, is home to the largest concentration of game in Mozambique.

The north coast of Mozambique

A visit to the north coast of Mozambique is also very rewarding. Here you will be able to explore the tropical Quirimba Archipelago and savour freshly caught fish and shellfish. The eleven most southern islands of the Quirimba Archipelago form Quirimba National Park and the coastal town of Pemba has a fantastic market and exquisite views over the bay. The most beautiful coral reefs in the south of Africa are to be found just off the coast of Pemba Island and only a stone's throw away from 'Wimbe Beach'.

Sample the culture on Ibo Island and Ilha de Moçambique

Slightly to the north of Pemba lies Ibo Island, which is part of the Querimba Archipelago. Ibo Island's narrow streets, forts and beautiful church give the impression that you've travelled back in time. The influences of the many cultures that have shaped Mozambique are clearly visible on Ilha de Moçambique, which is also referred to as Mozambique Island. The state of disrepair into which the once so magnificent architecture has fallen caused the northern part of Mozambique Island to be declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO.

Discover the south of Mozambique

The south of Mozambique has more to offer than merely beaches. You could also visit Limpopo National Park, which forms part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, or allow yourself to become submerged in the culture melting pot of Maputo. The island of Inhaca is around 40 kilometres off the coast of Maputo. As on most of the Mozambique islands, an unspoilt paradise of white sandy beaches and pristine forests awaits you here with untouched coral reefs on which no less that 160 different types of coral have been recorded.
