Unspoilt nature, a never-ending horizon and a great diversity of game - that's Namibia. This country takes its name from the Namib, which is a humid coastal desert that distinguishes itself through its breathtakingly beautiful landscapes and spectacular geological phenomena. The tropical rivers and flood plains of the Kavango and the Caprivi Strip in the far north-east contrast sharply with the arid areas, and it is these contrasts that make this great country so very special.
Namibia is home to the usual wild game. Yet even visitors who travel to Namibia specifically to see wild animals are moved by the unsurpassable experience that awaits them and the spectacular landscapes, from plateaus and mountains to deserts and lushly vegetated national parks. It's with good reason that Namibia was the first country to ratify the conservation of nature in its constitution.
Rainforests contrast with imposing sand dunes, which look as though they've been sculpted, and rock drawings contrast with rugged coastlines. The enormous disparities in landscape are without a doubt the most important reason why a visit to Namibia is a very 0eaningful experience. A number of other reasons include safaris and hiking. Most of Namibia is easily accessible by car, but some areas are only suitable for 4x4 drives.
Namib Naukluft Park is undoubtedly one of Namibia's highlights. This desert region is also home to Sesriem Canyon and Sossusvlei and after a few days in the desert, you can enjoy fine dining in Swakopmud or go on an excursion to Walvis Bay. The name of the expansive area of land that is Skeleton Coast National Park bears witness to the many ships that have been shipwrecked here during attempts to circumnavigate the Cape of Good Hope. Those who want to visit the park would be well advised to do so by airplane.
The Namibian capital of Windhoek and the harbour town of Luderitz help you gain a better insight into Germany's colonial past.
It would be a shame not to visit Damaraland during your travels through Namibia and see how the desert elephants have adapted to the adverse conditions here. Why not also visit the rock formations, rock drawings or Petrified Forest. For adventurers there is Kaokoland, where you will have the chance to meet the nomadic Himbas, who very rarely encounter tourists. The shimmering mirages in Namibia's Etosha Game Reserve enable you to see various types of game across a number of kilometres. Waterberg Plateau Park, also known as the lost paradise, was established as a sanctuary for rare and endangered species. In the Caprivi Strip you will find an entirely different environment to what you would expect in Namibia, with riverine forests, flood plains and Baobab trees.
If you're visiting the south of Namibia, travelling from South Africa for example, you must be sure not to miss the Fish Canyon Reserve. In the Kalahari Desert, nomadic antelope species, such as oryx, springbok and kudu, unwittingly attract lions, leopards and cheetahs.
