Kalahari Desert
Tailor-made holidays through the Kalahari in Namibia
The Kalahari Desert - known for its colourful red sand dunes, umbrella-like camel thorn trees and a large diversity of game - starts towards the south-east of Namibia's capital, Windhoek. Here you are likely to encounter various types of nomadic antelope, such as oryx, springbok and kudu, which in turn unwillingly entice lions, leopards and cheetahs to the area.
The vast Kalahari Desert
The vast Kalahari Desert stretches out over six countries in southern Africa, including the far south-east of Namibia. For a desert, the Kalahari has a notable abundance of plants and shrubs. The rolling landscape is covered with trees and shrubs that attract many wild animals. In the spring the red sand dunes are hidden under a carpet of flowers and green grass.
The Namibian part of the Kalahari Desert is an unbelievably beautiful, very expansive area in which interesting villages such as Gochas and Aranos are to be found. The lush vegetation around the springs just outside the villages attracts a large diversity of birds. The surrounding red sand dunes contrast starkly with the valley's white limestone rocks, into which the Auob River has worn its path. All that remains of the river is a dry riverbed, which takes you all the way to the South African border and Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
