Himba vrouw | Kaokoland | Namibie reizen
Kaokoland (also known as Kaokoveld or the Kunene region) in the north of Damaraland is highly recommendable for adventurers. The further you drive into this region, in the direction of Kunene River, the more likely you are to encounter the nomadic Himbas, who very rarely encounter tourists.
Kaokoland is one of Namibia's least developed areas. One explanation for this could be the lack of good roads in this mountainous area, which leave it difficult to access. It could also be explained by the fact that agriculture is not possible in this arid climate. Nevertheless, Kaokoland is still a great place to visit. It is one of the last remaining wilderness areas in southern Africa and it has a large variety of wild animals, including desert elephants. The Epupa Falls are a welcome solace in this arid landscape.
If you're interested in ancient cultures, Kaokoland is certainly worth a visit. This is where the Hereros and the Himbas live. The female Hereros are recognisable by the brightly coloured clothing they wear. The Himbas are one of the most interesting communities in Africa. They are also very friendly people who have maintained many of their traditional ways.
