Tanzania

Holidays in the best parts of Tanzania

Many people consider Tanzania to be Africa's most beautiful safari country. The most famous game reserves are located in the north of Tanzania, and in the south and west you can go on safaris through rugged parks that are less well known to the general public. After your safari, you might like to enjoy a beach add-on and the opportunity to relax on the coast and take in all that you have experienced.

Tanzanians care about nature

Which icon best typifies Tanzania? The snow-covered peak of Mount Kilimanjaro? A family of elephants wading through Rufiji River? A pride of lions sunbathing in Ngorongoro Crater, digesting their prey? Or the flamingo-pink surface of Lake Natron? Tanzania has unparalleled natural treasures and fortunately the country's inhabitants are aware of this fact: no less than 25 percent of the country has been declared a protected area, which is a larger percentage than any other African country. This protected area is home to one of the largest concentrations of mammals in Africa. Unfortunately, Tanzanians also have to stand by helplessly while the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro - described by Hemingway as 'unbelievably white' - melts under the sun, as a result of global CO2 emissions.

Holidays through Tanzania: where dreams become reality

In the early 1930s, Ernest Hemingway went on safari in Kenya and Tanzania. In Tanzania, he went hunting in the Serengeti, around Lake Manyara and to the west and south-east of what is now Tarangire National Park. His wife Pauline kept a record of his activities and a glance at the number of animals he killed will make you hair stand on end. Tanzania is still a popular safari country, although fortunately the weapons have now been replaced by cameras. In order to benefit from an authentic safari experience and see a large amount of game, you can opt for a mobile safari and stay in tented camps that are continually set up prior to your arrival in areas where the game is most abundant at that moment in time. A delicious meal will also be prepared for you and the camp will be dismantled and relocated after your stay.

Tanzania is an extremely exciting country: you can climb the highest mountains in Africa here, experience the overwhelming wildebeest migration across the Serengeti or dive among beautiful coral reefs and an unparalleled diversity of fish species. It's a country to quietly dream about as well as a country to visit if you want to meet the friendly inhabitants and make your dreams come true.

Highlights of Tanzania

Our own travels have enabled us to compile a list of favourite places and experiences, which we would like to share with you. This list grows longer each time we travel, because Tanzania is an inexhaustible country.

On safari through the northern parks of Tanzania

The most famous game reserves are in the north of Tanzania. Safaris through Lake Manyara National Park allow you to sample the essence of this country and the 'Escarpment' offers a magnificent view across the lake. Lake Natron, on the border between Tanzania and Kenya and in the middle of Rift Valley's moon landscape, is the only breeding place of the lesser flamingo. Serengeti National Park, which is also on the border with Kenya, is the oldest and most popular park in Tanzania, and perhaps also the most famous park in the world. Annually, a million wildebeest, 200,000 zebra and 300,000 Thomson's gazelle migrate northwards in search of green grass. Olduvai Gorge - the birthplace of humanity - is where Louise Leaky found the earliest hominid remains. In the compact nonetheless diverse Arusha National Park, you can visit a large variety of habitats within a couple of hours. And until you've visited Ngorongoro Crater, you haven't really experienced Africa at all; it is known as the eighth wonder of the world. For those who don't have enough time to visit Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park is an excellent alternative. This park is home to literally thousands of elephants and a wide variety of birds of prey.

Holidays along the coast and on the islands of Tanzania

The coast at Dar Es Salaam offers unparalleled diving opportunities. However, for the more curious travellers, the Spice Islands and coastal strip of the mainland have even more in store than stunning coral reefs. The bush in Saandani National Park borders the beach and it is the only game park in Tanzania to be located alongside the Indian Ocean.

Tailor-made safaris through Tanzania's southern and western parks

The reserves in southern Tanzania are still fairly unknown to many visitors, making this park much quieter. In addition, only 10 percent of Selous Game Reserve is open to visitors. Thanks to Rufiji River, this is one of the few reserves in Tanzania where you can take boat trips. Ruaha National park is one of Tanzania's best kept secrets and a fantastic place to see large numbers of game converging on the banks of the Great Ruaha River. Katavi National Park is the ultimate in unspoilt nature and Lake Tanganyika, in the west of Tanzania, is Africa's deepest as well as largest freshwater lake. The Mahale Mountains encircle the lake like sentinels and these are covered by rainforest, which is home - as is the northern shore in Gombe Stream - to many chimpanzees. This is also a great place to simply kick back and relax during your travels.
