Lake Natron, Tanzania
Individual safaris to Lake Natron in Tanzania
Lake Natron is located on the border between Tanzania and Kenya, in the middle of Rift Valley's volcanic moon landscape. The amazing colours of Lake Natron are due to the blue algae that thrive in its salt water. You can go for very rewarding walks around the lake and up to the streams and waterfalls that gush from the sharp drops. You might also like to witness the illusion of mirages towards the north of the lake.
The exquisite colours of Lake Natron
The water in the lake evaporates in the dry season, making the remainder of the water saltier. Micro-organisms such as blue algae thrive in this environment. The pigment in the plasma of their cells causes a deep red colour to form in the deeper parts of the lake and orange in the shallower parts. Yet it is not only these colours that make Lake Natron unique; this is the only breeding place of the lesser flamingo and every year no less than 2 million lesser flamingos alight here to lay eggs and breed. They eat spirulina, which is a blue-green algae that contain red pigments that are passed on to the flamingos.
